This week was awfully Darren heavy so Walt handed me the reigns for the blog post.
After a few great tracks from Walter we jumped right into our Wildcard Set for the week. The theme this time was "Before they were Famous" basically the idea was bands that feature members who got famous for doing something that is not this band. The set started with a Journey song that features American Idol's Randy Jackson on bass (thanks WPRK program director Jaclyn for the tip.). Followed but Phantom Planet with Jason Schwartzman on drums. Then the 80's synth-pop of Seona Dancing featuring vocals by the ever funny but not terribly musically inclined Ricky Gervais. Comics greatest writer (or at least one of the best) Grant Morrison turned things around for us though with some great punk in his band the Fauves. Followed by the band that inspired the set list, Chameleon Church, which features none other than Chevy Chase on the drums.
My set was up next which, now that I look at it, features a lot of really sad 90's music. The Promise Ring started things off with a general upbeat tune, which was immediately cut to shreads by Built to Spill and Guided By Voices. Then Jonathan Richman brought us some early summer nostalgia and I closed things out with Barenaked Ladies complaining about gender roles. Oh, and since Walter made fun of me about it last week this week The Promise Ring is the only band with a "The".
Karlyn's Korner this week was as varied and educational as I've seen it. Jonathan Coulton taught us about the Presidents. Scha Dara Parr rapped about our favorite handheld. The Muppets took us away on a pirate ship. They Might be Giants opined about a lack of creativity, and Donald Glover (as Childish Gambino) told us about his lady troubles.
Special G couldn't be with us this week so filling in his seat was Todd Blackwell. If Special G is this Away Teams version of Q, Todd is our Data. Always cool, intellectual, and always searching for the humanity in things. He started us out this week (as he does everytime he's here) with a spoken word piece, this one from Harold Pinters "Betrayal". Followed immediately by a Lead Belly track. The wonderful workings of his robot heart were laid out with some other great tracks by the king of the crooners Frank Sinatra, David Byrnes utter genius in the Talking Heads, and Icelands own queen of strange Bjork.
We ended the night with our featured segment, the Artists Spotlight. This week I took you through the career of one of the best producers around, Brian Burton a.k.a. Danger Mouse. We started with a chronicling of his relationship with Cee-lo green and the formation of Gnarls Barkley, Touched on the masterful "Grey Album", and brought up his recent collaborations with Damon Albarn and James Mercer.
Until next week folks . I'm Darren Credible and you're not (you see that's funny cause we mention chevy chase earlier and that's what he used to say on SNL.... nevermind)
