Welcome to the new home for The Away Team with Walter Friendly, a radio show on WPRK 91.5 FM, Winter Park, Florida. Our show plays Friday mornings from 3:00 to 6:00 eastern standard time. We hope you'll become a fan.

Now, on a Starfleet crew, The Away Team is a small group of two or more who beams down to a planet's surface to do what is, basically, the captain's dirty work. We call our show The Away Team because we once had a captain who gave us a continuing mission to beam down to the radio station each week and show you something aurally magnificent. This is a goal we try to meet without fail.

This particular Away Team consists of three constant members and a cast of rotating guests. Our first officer, in command of this crew, is Walter Friendly, an amicable fellow with the heart of a cobbler. Oh, not a cobbler of streets, no no, but of course a cobbler of songs. And he is like to pick from all the broad areas of popular music which are generally pleasing to the ear, and to piece them together into sets that guarantee to take you somewhere. Ever at Walter's side is Darren Credible, the Team's chief engineer, who keeps things running smoothly with aplomb, checking our facts and always keeping his selections classic. The third and final permanent member of The Away Team is Special G. Now if Walter's songs are guaranteed to take you somewhere, Special G's songs are guaranteed to get you there flying, be it in a starship, a hot air balloon, or on the wings of some great mythical beast. His flights of fancy are unmatched.

Week 10: Le Petit Pauvre

Walter Friendly here. What a show this week! Even Stiles was good! Tonight on The Away Team we had one of my oldest and dearest, Hot Dotty. You can tell a lot about a lady by the songs she picks, and Dotty is a lady who knows where it's at. After Dotty, Darren stepped out from behind the board and outclassicked even himself. He did so well that we gave him the Spotlight!

Three very good friends of the show all have birthdays this weekend, so our Wildcard Set for week 10 is all birthday songs. Of course, this is The Away Team, so no ordinary birthday songs would do. The personalities of our DJs always shine bright, boosted by WPRK's heavy artillery and carried through the air straight into your ear drums. Mmm. That's good birthday.

Teva Toamy returned tonight with another Week in History, but not only that. She also brought a set that had real, honest to goodness roots. Grew roots and stuck right in the ground below the station. It's growin'. I can't wait to see what blooms. It all comes down to that Fleetwood Mac song, I think. That's the taproot that makes for a strong tree.

It's impossible to determine what the best Disney songs are, but on Karlyn's Korner we played at least some of them. Robert and Richard Sherman wrote songs for some of the most memorable films of the 20th century, including The Sword in the Stone, Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Aristocats, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Three of the four songs we played tonight were penned by the Sherman Brothers. The other was a Frank Churchill song from Disney's Dumbo called "When I See an Elephant Fly," the controversial song sung by the crows at the beginning of the third act. I think I see this Disney thing becoming its own segment at some point. You'll have to listen to see.

Stiles played us an operatic song. It was good.

Finally, my favorite part of the show, the Artist Spotlight, was created by our own Darren Credible. Tonight Darren gave us a spotlight on Laura Nyro, a relatively unknown singer/songwriter whose catalog influenced some of the biggest artists around, including Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Stephen Schwartz, Alice Cooper, and Jenny Lewis. To learn more about Laura Nyro, just google her, stupid.

A special thanks to Neil Bernard for calling in and requesting what will surely become his theme song, and another happy birthday to Becca Miller, Brittany Wine, and Damian Summers. Since it's been ten whole weeks, I've decided to retire two artists from heavy rotation. Harry Nilsson and Randy Newman, you will be missed. And a warm welcome to Beck. Thanks again for listening to The Away Team on WPRK 91.5FM, the voice of Rollins College, and the best in basement radio.
