Welcome to the new home for The Away Team with Walter Friendly, a radio show on WPRK 91.5 FM, Winter Park, Florida. Our show plays Friday mornings from 3:00 to 6:00 eastern standard time. We hope you'll become a fan.

Now, on a Starfleet crew, The Away Team is a small group of two or more who beams down to a planet's surface to do what is, basically, the captain's dirty work. We call our show The Away Team because we once had a captain who gave us a continuing mission to beam down to the radio station each week and show you something aurally magnificent. This is a goal we try to meet without fail.

This particular Away Team consists of three constant members and a cast of rotating guests. Our first officer, in command of this crew, is Walter Friendly, an amicable fellow with the heart of a cobbler. Oh, not a cobbler of streets, no no, but of course a cobbler of songs. And he is like to pick from all the broad areas of popular music which are generally pleasing to the ear, and to piece them together into sets that guarantee to take you somewhere. Ever at Walter's side is Darren Credible, the Team's chief engineer, who keeps things running smoothly with aplomb, checking our facts and always keeping his selections classic. The third and final permanent member of The Away Team is Special G. Now if Walter's songs are guaranteed to take you somewhere, Special G's songs are guaranteed to get you there flying, be it in a starship, a hot air balloon, or on the wings of some great mythical beast. His flights of fancy are unmatched.

Week 04: Rancho Stella

This is what radio is all about. Good evening, everyone. I'm Walter Friendly, and this is the Away Team. This week, we were graced with a visit by Foley, a very old friend of the show who's been due an appearance for quite a while. Of course Dave, Bruce, Kevin, Mark, and Scott from The Kids in the Hall snuck on every once in a while between songs, because what is a night with Foley without a little sketch comedy?

Special G painted us a sonic image of a planet rife with conflict. Torn apart by war, weather, and other things that begin with W, this planet was quite a sociological shift for the Team. The tyrannical leader's grip on his society was tenuous, at best. We were fortunate enough to be present as a giant from the wilds stormed through and ripped apart the last visage of this tyrant's hold on the enslaved denizens of the lost world. As we raged, we pondered how a civilization could become so bloodthirsty, and thanked the stars that with all their strife, they never discovered the technology to spread their hate and spittle to other systems of the galaxy.

Darren Credible maintained our pop sensibilities tonight with 5 classic songs from the last 40 years. In his latter days, Uncle Tupelo was better than some Wilco. The Lemonheads reminded us what being a kid in the 90s was like, and The Replacements reminded us that it was better in the 80s. Then The Zombies blew them both away, and The Specials picked it up, picked it up, picked it up, picked it up. Incidentally, Uncle Tupelo was the only band in this set without a "The" at the beginning.

A cool new(ish) segment on The Away Team is the Wildcard Set. In this segment, one DJ chooses a category, and each of us picks one song that fits within that category. This week, Special G chose songs of metamorphosis. Each of us in turn discovered that the songs would start out doing one thing, and then just like that, change to something else! Karlyn's Korner got an actual request from Karlyn this week: Making Plans for Nigel by XTC! She also got schooled by Yakko, bitched at by Raffi, Cavity Searched by Weird Al, and Tractor Beamed by MC Chris.

Foley took us in a rockin' direction with The Coachwhips and Stiff Little Fingers before making a weird left turn with Stump, which led us to the corner of trendy and midwest with Voxtrot and rising local Chicago band, Absolutely Not. They're a great little garage band fronted by a friend of Foley's, and they've opened for such acts in Chi-town as Menomena, Javelin, and The Arctic Monkeys. If you'd like them to send you a free CD, you can email Donnie at absolutelynotband@gmail.com.

And finally, tonight's artist spotlight was on a band very near and dear to my heart, The Billy Nayer Show. BNS is the band of Cory McAbee, an artist of many mediums. His psyche is a little burned at the edges and a little rotten at the core, but his films and his music strike just the right crooked chord within the listener. It is an aspiration of The Away Team to get Cory's masterpiece, The American Astronaut, to screen here in Orlando. If you'd like to know more about The Billy Nayer Show or Cory McAbee, you can visit one or both of these websites below:

Our course for the next show has not yet been charted, but we know for certain that new and exciting territory awaits. Thanks for tuning in to The Away Team tonight, and remember to keep your ear to the ground, and the ground tuned to WPRK 91.5 FM, the voice of Rollins College and the best in basement radio.

  1. You have no idea how excited I am to be able to stay up and listen this week. School's been keeping me down for the count.
